Where we left off last year
2024 season: 42 points, 10th in the Western Conference, 18th in MLS
Last season, yet another disappointing year for Austin FC, was filled with flailing as they tried to get back to the 2022 version of themselves.
Sebastian Driussi took another step back in the No. 10 spot – his goal contribution total dropped from 27 in 2022 to 15 in 2023 to just 10 in 2024. Austin never found an answer at striker. Designated Player winger Osman Bukari didn’t hit the ground running after arriving in the summer. Josh Wolff didn’t last the year as manager. And the club missed the playoffs for the third time in their four seasons of existence. Things were bleak, folks.
What changed in the offseason
Notable arrivals:
- Nico Estevez, manager: Austin FC went from one former Gregg Berhalter assistant coach who was struggling in MLS to…another former Gregg Berhalter assistant coach who has struggled in MLS. Though he had some success early in his FC Dallas tenure, Estevez was fired in June. He wasn’t given an especially talented, balanced, or healthy squad in Dallas. Will things be any different at another stop in Texas? Well, Austin FC’s spending over the last two transfer windows certainly creates hope!
