It’s the most wonderful time of the year, people. You know it. I know it. Agents know it. Everybody knows it.
It’s transfer season.
The summer transfer window fully opens in MLS on Thursday, July 18th and runs all the way through Wednesday, August 14th, giving teams one more chance to bolster their squads ahead of the playoff push. Some teams have already dipped their toes — or in the case of St. Louis City, their entire lower body — into the market to have players signed and ready to go right after the window's cracked open. Others have much more work to do.
Today, we’re diving into all 29 teams to examine their biggest needs over the next month.
Atlanta United
Needs: Attacking midfielder, striker
The Five Stripes began 2024 with two attacking DPs: striker Giorgos Giakoumakis and No. 10 Thiago Almada.
Both of those players are now gone, fetching transfer fees that will give Atlanta United president Garth Lagerwey tons of room in the budget to work with this summer. Caleb Wiley is on the way out, too, but Atlanta already signed a left back from Portugal in Pedro Amador to presumably step into his starting spot. Really all of Atlanta’s focus, then, should be on the No. 9 spot and the No. 10 spot.
“We are trying to sign the type of player that historically has not come to MLS before,” Lagerwey said last week. Atlanta like their in-prime Europeans these days and are reportedly trying to land Atalanta attacking midfielder Aleksey Miranchuk.
Austin FC
Needs: Chance creator, striker
