Inter Miami midfielder Diego Gomez has completed a transfer to the Premier League’s Brighton & Hove Albion, the MLS club announced earlier today.
Gomez’s move involves a club-record outgoing fee for Inter Miami, reported by GiveMeSport to be $15 million with possible add-ons taking that number even higher. On top of being a club-record sale for Miami, Gomez’s move to England represents one of the most expensive outgoing transfers in MLS history.
The 21-year-old central midfielder thrived in MLS, arriving after Lionel Messi joined the club in the summer of 2023 and becoming a key player for Inter Miami in their most recent campaign. Capped for Paraguay at the international level before arriving in Florida, Gomez played a key role in his country qualifying for the 2024 Olympics and continues to earn minutes with the senior national team.
“The growth Diego has shown as a player since joining Inter Miami has been exponential. His contributions to the team both in midfield and in attack have been key for us through a historic period,” Inter Miami president of football operations Raul Sanllehi said in a statement. “We are excited to see Diego continue to represent us as he makes the jump to one of the world’s best leagues in the English Premier League,” he added.
“I’m thankful to Inter Miami for the incredible opportunity it provided me to join this fantastic organization, and to make history with the club. I’m grateful for the trust the club had in me, and everything it has done to help me with my development since joining in July of last year, making me a better player and person on and off the pitch. I will always carry Inter Miami with me in my heart,” Gomez said.
