Jesper Sorensen’s tenure as the head coach of the Vancouver Whitecaps is off to a flying start, with his team sitting on top of the Western Conference and in the quarterfinals of the Concacaf Champions Cup despite relentless early adversity.
After parting ways with former manager Vanni Sartini and losing Designated Player Stuart Armstrong over the offseason, the Whitecaps have claimed 12 points from a possible 15 in MLS play. While a loss to the Chicago Fire on Saturday ended their perfect (and historic) start, with six starters missing either through injury or international duty, it wasn’t indicative of where they are as a team.
Whitecaps fans have every reason to be thrilled with the opening weeks of the new campaign, and should have their sights set on a run in the playoffs.
So, what’s behind Vancouver's hot start to the 2025 season? Let’s dig in.
Vancouver’s aggressive defending
The newly appointed Sorensen, who arrived from Denmark over the offseason, has brought a brand-new approach to the program – and so far his philosophies couldn’t be more clear. The Whitecaps are here to dominate possession, and the moment they lose it, they’re going to press from the front with unmatched intensity in order to win it back.
