Toronto FC announced on Friday that John Herdman has resigned from his position as head coach.
Though a specific reason for Herdman’s decision was not included in a release from Toronto FC, his resignation comes in the midst of the drone-spying scandal plaguing Canada Soccer. Before taking over in Toronto, Herdman served as manager of the Canada’s men’s national team — and he was in charge of Canada’s women’s national team prior to leading the men’s team.
"I can again clarify that at a FIFA World Cup, pinnacle event, Olympic Games, at a Youth World Cup, those activities have not been undertaken," Herdman said in July, referring to spying via drones. "And I've got nothing else to say on that matter."
Herdman was named Toronto’s head coach in August, 2023, but only began his time on the sidelines for TFC’s final game of the 2023 campaign. The team finished 15th in the Eastern Conference that year before finishing 11th in the East in 2024.
“Personally, I have made the difficult decision that it’s the right time for me to step away from the club, as the organization defines its vision for the future,” Herdman said in a statement.
“On behalf of the entire organization, I thank John for his commitment to Toronto FC and for the important strides for the club during his time as head coach,” Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE) president & CEO Keith Pelley said. MLSE owns Toronto FC.
Pelley said Toronto FC will begin the search for their next head coach “immediately”.
Joe’s view:
The timing of Herdman’s resignation just one full season into his tenure in Toronto seems to point to off-field factors entering into this decision.
