“King” Josef Martinez could rebuild his kingdom with Inter Miami

One of the faces of MLS is now an Inter Miami player. Here's what Josef Martinez will bring to his new club.

Josef Martinez is out of Atlanta United.

One of the faces of MLS is now an Inter Miami player after leaving Atlanta earlier this week. The writing was on the wall, along with the chicken and rice that the 29-year-old striker knocked off a catering table and onto the walls of his team’s locker room during an altercation with manager Gonzalo Pineda last year.

As time wore on in Atlanta, we saw fewer goals from Martinez. Fewer record-breaking moments. Fewer tweets referring to himself as a king after scoring yet another game-winner (though plenty of others, from Atlanta Magazine to the club itself, freely used that nickname for Martinez, too). Instead, we saw more cameras panning to him on the bench dealing with an injury and more Twitter rumblings of a broken relationship between player and club.

Now the relationship is well and truly broken. On Wednesday, Martinez signed for Miami, where he’ll have the chance to face off against his former team multiple times in 2023. But what exactly will the 2023 version of Josef Martinez look like? And what will he bring to his new club?
