You know the drill. It’s time for this week’s 10 MLS Thoughts.
1. Facundo Farias’ brutal injury
Of all the players not named Lionel Messi in Inter Miami’s squad, there was one that I was especially looking forward to watching in 2024: Facundo Farias.
The 21-year-old winger was so much fun for Miami after joining mid-season from Argentina. Farias’ final third production wasn’t quite there to close out 2023, but his vision and dribbling ability pointed to a breakout 2024. Unfortunately, in a brutal turn of events, Farias suffered a long-term ACL injury in the second half of Miami’s preseason opener against El Salvador on Friday.
Barring something of a miracle, he’ll miss the entire season.
There are layers of disappointment here for Farias. Not only does he have to work his way back from the second major knee injury of a young career, but he’s also missing out on a once-in-a-lifetime chance to play alongside Inter Miami’s Big Four. Most professionals never get an opportunity to play with one legend — prior to his ACL injury, Farias was on track to play with four.
To have one of the greatest experiences any soccer player could have ripped away from you just…hurts.
Best wishes, Facundo. Come back soon.
