Marco Reus: “Confident I’m going to be ready” for MLS Cup despite groin injury

Reus spoke with the media on Thursday ahead of Saturday’s final between his LA Galaxy and the New York Red Bulls.

CARSON, Calif. — After being substituted off at halftime against the Seattle Sounders in the Western Conference final last Saturday due to a groin injury, LA Galaxy midfielder Marco Reus expects to be fit to play in MLS Cup.

“I’m doing pretty well,” Reus said in a media availability at Dignity Health Sports Park on Thursday. “I was training today a little bit. So tomorrow we have another day and then one more night, so I think I will be fine. It’s a little bit a question of the timing, but I’m pretty confident I’m going to be ready.”

Reus said he spent some time training with his teammates on Thursday morning, though he also spent time training off to the side and in the gym.

On Tuesday, LA Galaxy head coach Greg Vanney said he had “some optimism that [Reus] can get himself turned around and be ready for us.” With Riqui Puig missing Saturday’s MLS Cup due to a torn ACL suffered in the second half of the Western Conference final, there’s extra responsibility to be shouldered in the Galaxy’s midfield.

“We have to redefine who we're going to be and how we're going to win this game without someone like Riqui on the field, and we certainly can do that,” Vanney said.
