MLS data deep-dive: San Diego FC's identity, perfect Vancouver Whitecaps & more

San Diego FC have our attention. Plus, the New England Revolution are in trouble and the Vancouver Whitecaps are perfect.

Let’s dive into the most intriguing statistical storylines from the latest set of MLS games.

San Diego FC’s identity

San Diego, you officially have my attention.

With a very clear tactical approach set by chief soccer officer Tyler Heaps and the larger Right To Dream organization, San Diego FC hired Mikey Varas as their manager to execute a possession-based game model. As Heaps told Backheeled ahead of the season, they want to “avoid duels at all costs”. He also mentioned Wilfried Nancy’s Columbus Crew as an inspiration.

Inside San Diego FC’s tactical identity: “You won’t see us play long out of a goal kick”
Inspired by the Columbus Crew, here’s how MLS’s newest expansion team developed a detailed on-field approach.

So far in their expansion season, San Diego FC have recorded two wins and one draw and currently boast the second-best xG differential in the Western Conference. Their non-penalty xG per shot is the ninth-highest in MLS and they’re actually underperforming their xG overall. Pair that with being fifth in the league in touches in the attacking penalty box and fourth in the attacking third and you’re talking about a team that is finding good spots a lot.
