Power Rankings never cease to spark outrage. But here at Backheeled? We’re not here to cause anger. No, we’re here to dissect the latest performances, trends, tactics, and news for each of MLS’s 30 clubs. Every week during the MLS season, Ben Wright will guide you through the Eastern Conference teams and Joe Lowery will do the same for the West.
Okay, fine. We’re also here to spark some outrage, because we’re ranking all 30 teams, too. Power Rankings are based on each club’s average position across Ben and Joe’s individual rankings. Onwards.
1. FC Cincinnati
Kevin Denkey had himself an MLS debut on Saturday night. The once MLS-record signing started up top with fellow debutant Evander playing behind him, and bagged the winner in a 1-0 victory over New York Red Bulls. The goal itself was a classic striker’s goal, and the Togo international was incredibly brave to go up for the header against an onrushing Carlos Coronel. You love to see it.

I’ve spent so much time this weekend thinking about this turn. Receiving the ball mid-pirouette is one thing, but then the casual roll to the left foot and chop back to the right was simply lovely. There aren’t many No. 9s in MLS with feet like that. Add in the bravery he showed on his goal, his elite hold-up play and his ability to connect passes in the final third, and Denkey may already be the most well-rounded No. 9 in MLS. I cannot wait to watch more. - Ben Wright
