The rivalry between MLS and Liga MX has dominated North American club soccer for decades.
Five of the past seven Concacaf Champions Cup/League finals have featured a team from each league, Liga MX is a frequent opponent for the MLS in the league’s midseason All-Star Game, and both Campeones Cup and Leagues Cup were created as more ways to foster the competition between the leagues.
Liga MX has mostly dominated in continental competition thanks to its much longer history spanning back over 80 years and the resources enjoyed by some of its wealthier clubs. Clubs from Mexico’s top flight have 34 Concacaf Champions Cup/League titles compared to MLS’s three. They also tend to be among the higher-seeded clubs in Concacaf with the likes of Club América, Monterrey, and Tigres typically among the top five in the official club rankings.
