Where we left off last year
2024 season: 39 points, 9th in the Western Conference
In hindsight, San Antonio was obviously a team caught between eras in 2024. Marco Ferruzzi, the club's new sporting director, built a roster to take the club in a more patient and physical direction. Manager Alen Marcina, meanwhile, tried to oblige but quickly had to revert to his direct template in spite of that roster build. By season's end, the clashing concepts resulted in a shocking playoff miss.
San Antonio ended up using 34 different players in league action, the second-highest number in the league. Marcina could never nail down a core, and numerous in-season signings failed to right the ship. Yes, Jorge Hernandez still picked up nine assists to nearly lead the league. Yes, players like Mitchell Taintor and Kevon Lambert were terrific in the back half. There ultimately wasn't nearly enough consistency around those core pieces to do the job.
