Everyone, meet San Diego FC. San Diego FC, meet everyone.
Joining MLS as the league’s 30th team, San Diego FC are poised to be a truly unique club in the American soccer landscape. They want to be the “Ajax of North America”, according to founding partner Tom Penn.
With an ownership connection to the renowned international Right to Dream academy, a residency academy complex on the way, and the ability to recruit and develop players from across the border in Tijuana, San Diego could eventually come close to pulling off that lofty stated goal. It’ll take years, but their investment into the academy space has the potential to create something special in a talent-rich market.
While their academy setup matures, sporting director Tyler Heaps and manager Mikey Varas have had an expansion squad to build and a tactical philosophy to create — and maybe even a superstar to lure.
